Debby Boone Gets a King and a Lance in North Carolina Theatre's Camelot

By Kenneth Jones
11 Aug 2005

Christian Whelan will play King Arthur and Michael Hunsaker will be Lancelot opposite Debby Boone's Guenevere in North Carolina Theatre's staging of Camelot Sept. 10-18 in Raleigh.

Lamont Wade will play loyal counsel Pellinore. Additional casting will be announced shortly.

Christian Whelan was Zoser in the first national tour of Aida, Willie Conklin in the first national tour of Ragtime and Phillip in Off-Broadway's recent Trolls.

Michael Hunsaker has been on TV in "Ed", "As the World Turns" and "All My Children." He appeared in tours of Ragtime, playing Younger Brother and understudy to Willie Conklin.

Boone is a veteran of such Broadway musicals as Seven Brides for Seven Brothers and the recent Grease! revival, as well as tours including The Sound of Music. She'll now take on the slightly more racy role of Queen Guenevere, pulled between the King of England and his favorite Gallic knight-warrior. The classic score includes "The Simple Joys and Maidenhood," "I Wonder What the King Is Doing Tonight," "Guenevere," "Fie on Goodness," "The Seven Deadly Virtues," "C'est Moi," "If Ever I Would Leave You," "How to Handle a Woman," the title song and more.

Julie Andrews originated the royal role on Broadway. Boone is the daughter of crooner Pat Boone, and had a hit with the pop song "You Light Up My Life."

Stephen Terrell is directing the Raleigh, NC, production of Camelot, by Moss Hart, Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe, drawn from T.H. White's novel, "The Once and Future King."

Performances are at Raleigh Memorial Auditorium in the BTi Center for the Performing Arts.
