Patrick Wilson, Sutton Foster and Christian Borle Talk to Theatre Students in Moveable Arts "Retreat" in NYC Aug. 17-21

By Kenneth Jones
17 Aug 2005

Moveable Arts, a newly formed non-profit educational organization, is hosting a workshop "retreat" at which theatre students can learn from Broadway stars in New York City.

Beginning Aug. 17, Broadway and film stars including Patrick Wilson, who recently starred in the motion picture "The Phantom of the Opera" and Broadway's The Full Monty and Oklahoma!, Sutton Foster (Thoroughly Modern Millie, Little Women) and Christian Borle (Spamalot) will share their insights and experiences with students from theatre programs across the United States.

"Students will immerse themselves in a rigorous schedule of classes geared towards making their on-stage careers a reality," according to Moveable Arts. "Classes in casting, production, cold reading, choreography, and film and TV audition technique will comprise the comprehensive weekend, amongst other invaluable course instruction, including a symposium with the cast of Spamalot."

The Moveable Arts Summer Retreat runs to Aug. 21.

Adam Pelty, co-founder of Moveable Arts, said in a statement, "We've assembled an amazing collective of actors, producers, dancers, writers, choreographers, casting directors and agents not only for the work they’ve accomplished, but more importantly for their desire to teach and cultivate the next generation of theatre professionals."

In addition to the weekend workshop, Moveable Arts will form relationships with performing arts schools across the country and create custom-made workshops designed for their individual programs. Teams of instructors will travel to schools and conduct experience-based seminars that give a pragmatic look at the life of a Broadway performer.

Matthew Stocke, co-founder said, "Our goal is to offer access at the highest level, and to use our experience as Broadway professionals to teach the practical aspects of making a living in the performing arts."

Wilson stated, "What sets Movable Arts apart from other programs is that industry professionals are doing the footwork by traveling to theatre schools and arts programs around the country and bringing their Broadway experiences with them. It's a door-to-door service, and I'm excited to be a part of such an innovative program."

Pelty, who appeared in Broadway's Steel Pier, Titanic and The Scarlet Pimpernel; Stocke, of Broadway's Titanic, The Full Monty and The Boy from Oz; and Merri Sugarman (Casting Director, ABC, Dreamworks) are the creative forces behind Moveable Arts.
