Cast Announced for Playwrights Horizons' Manic Flight Reaction, Schulman's Comedy About a Daughter's Discovery

By Kenneth Jones
18 Aug 2005

Casting has been announced for the Playwrights Horizons world premiere of Sarah Schulman's Manic Flight Reaction, about the revelation of a mother's past love affair, beginning performances Oct. 13 at PH's intimate Peter Jay Sharp Theater on West 42nd Street.

Trip Cullman will direct a cast featuring 2005 Juilliard graduate Jessica Collins, Angel Desai (The Bubbly Black Girl Sheds Her Chameleon Skin at Playwrights Horizons), Michael Esper (Moon Bath Girl, Gone Missing), Austin Lysy (Other People at Playwrights Horizons), Deirdre O'Connell (2005 Obie for Sustained Excellence in Performing, Spatter Pattern and Moe's Lucky Seven at Playwrights Horizons, Drama Desk nomination for Love and Anger) and Molly Price (Officer Faith Yokas on TV's "Third Watch").

The play "concerns a middle-aged professor (Deirdre O'Connell) who must confront the demons of her idealistic past when her daughter (Jessica Collins) learns one of her mother's past liaisons (Molly Price) is the wife of the leading presidential candidate," according to Playwrights Horizons. "Manic Flight Reaction is a razor-edged comedy about abandonment, the intrusion of the mass-market media and the need for faith in goodness, despite the odds."

Opening is Oct. 23. Performances will continue to Nov. 6.

Cullman staged Off-Broadway's The Last Sunday in June and Swimming in the Shallows. Schulman is the author of Carson McCullers, the novels "Rat Bohemia" and "Shimmer," and is the recipient of the Stonewall Award for Significant Contribution to Gay and Lesbian Life in the United States.

The production will feature scenic design by Louisa Thompson, costume design by Jenny Mannis, lighting design by Paul Whitaker and sound design by Fitz Patton. Production stage manager is Neveen Mahmoud.

The performance schedule for Manic Flight Reaction will be Tuesdays through Fridays at 7:30 PM, Saturdays at 2 & 7:30 PM and Sundays at 2 & 7 PM. Tickets are $40 and will go on sale to the general public Sept. 14.

For more information call (212) 279-4200 or visit the Playwrights Horizons website at www.playwrightshorizons.org.

The first preview Oct. 13 will be a pay-what-you-can performance, at which a limited number of tickets will be offered on a walk-up, cash-only, first-come, first-served basis, starting one hour before showtime.
