Is Christopher Meloni Headed to Broadway?

By Andrew Gans
24 Aug 2005

Christopher Meloni — the star of TV's "Law & Order: SVU" — may be headed to The Great White Way.

Meloni was recently seen at Ireland's Gate Theatre starring in a production of Arthur Miller's A View from The Bridge. Liz Smith reports that Meloni's performance as Eddie was so well-received that producers are interested in having the actor reprise that role on Broadway.

About his performance in the classic Miller tragedy, the Irish Times called Meloni "the real thing . . . a tremendously forceful presence with all the confidence fame brings and none of the self-indulgence."

A View from the Bridge would mark Meloni's Broadway debut. His many screen credits include "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit," "Oz," "That Brief Moment," "Runaway Bride," "Carlo's Wake," "Shift," "The Souler Opposite," "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas," "Leaving L.A.," "Bound," "Twelve Monkeys" and "Golden Gate."

Set in the Red Hook area of Brooklyn, New York in the 1950s, Arthur Miller's A View from the Bridge tells the story of a longshoreman's forbidden love for his niece and the lengths to which he works to keep her close. The play debuted on Broadway in 1955 at the Coronet Theatre. The most recent revival — directed by Michael Mayer and starring Allison Janney, Anthony LaPaglia, Stephen Spinella and Brittany Murphy — opened in 1997.
