Rebel Without a Cause to Play Off-Broadway's Lion Theatre

By Andrew Gans
21 Sep 2005

A stage version of the classic James Dean film "Rebel Without a Cause" will begin performances at Off-Broadway's Lion Theatre Oct. 6.

Based on the screenplay by Stewart Stern, James Fuller's Rebel Without a Cause will be co-directed by Brian Stites and Joshua Coleman. The limited engagement — presented by Barely Balancing Artists — will run through Oct. 30.

Allie Mulholland, Joshua Coleman and Erin Cunningham will star in the new production with supporting roles played by Adeline Drescher, Selena C. Dukes, Stan Andrew, Gio Crisafulli, Swann Gruen, Peter Bongiorno, Jamie Effros, Major Dodge and Jonathan Maccia.

Rebel Without a Cause, according to production notes, tells the story of "Jim Stark, a lonely, conflicted teenager from a 'good family' who finds himself in yet another new town, trying to make sense of his surroundings and finding nothing but trouble and a mixed bag of friends. In a whirlwind period of twenty-four hours, Jim discovers true love and great tragedy."

The 1955 film "Rebel Without a Cause" featured a screenplay by Stern, which was originally adapted by Irving Shulman from a story by Nicholas Ray; Ray also directed. The cast featured James Dean as Jim Stark, Natalie Wood as Judy, Sal Mineo as John "Plato" Crawford, Jim Backus as Frank Stark and Ann Doran as Mrs. Carol Stark. The film was nominated for three Academy Awards — for Mineo and Wood's performances and for Ray (Best Writing, Motion Picture Story).

The Lion Theatre is located on Theatre Row at 410 West 42nd Street. The show will offer performances Thursdays-Saturdays at 8 PM, Sundays at 2 PM and Mondays at 8 PM. Tickets, priced at $50, are available by calling (212) 279-4200 or by visiting www.ticketcentral.com.
