Hellman's Watch on the Rhine Gets Concert Staging by TACT Oct. 15-17

By Kenneth Jones
30 Sep 2005

TACT (The Actors Company Theatre) co-artistic directors Scott Alan Evans, Cynthia Harris and Simon Jones announced casting for its 2005-06 season opener, Lillian Hellman's 1941 drama, Watch on the Rhine.

The Oct. 15-17 concert staging of the play in Manhattan continues TACT's mission of "presenting neglected or rarely produced plays of literary merit." Scott Alan Evans directs.

"When an idealist anti-fascist German flees his country with his children and wife to find sanctuary in America with his wife's family, he discovers that he cannot rest without compromising his deeply held beliefs," according to TACT.

The cast includes TACT company members Kyle Fabel, Cynthia Harris, Darrie Lawrence, Francesca Di Mauro, Margaret Nichols and guest artists Terry Layman, Sean Moran, Leah Morales, Daniel Oreskes and Travis Walters.

The production team includes Mary Louise Geiger (lighting design), David Toser (costume design), David Macdonald (original music) and Susannah Baddeil (dialect coach). Dawn Dunlop is production stage manager.

Performances will take place at Florence Gould Hall at the French Institute Alliance Français (55 East 59th Street) on Oct. 15 at 7:30 PM; Oct. 16 at 2 PM; and Oct. 17 at 7:30 PM.

Tickets are $20 and may be purchased by calling Ticketmaster at (212) 307-4100. Tickets can also be purchased at the Florence Gould Hall box office located at 55 East 59th Street (between Madison and Park Avenues).

Watch on the Rhine opened at the Martin Beck Theatre on April 1, 1941, with a cast that included Ann Blyth, Paul Lukas (who won a 1943 "Best Actor" Oscar for the film version starring Bette Davis) and Lucile Watson. It ran for nearly 400 performances.

The main stage season includes He & She by Rachel Crothers: Nov. 19-21; A play TBA March 11-13, 2006 and The Hot L Baltimore by Lanford Wilson May 6-8, 2006. For more information on TACT, visit www.TACTnyc.org.
