Follies Star Cast in ABC's "Commander in Chief"

By Andrew Gans
31 Oct 2005

Polly Bergen, who received a Tony nomination for her performance as Carlotta in the 2001 revival of Follies, will soon be seen in the hit new ABC television series "Commander in Chief."

Bergen, according to the New York Post, will play the mother of President Mackenzie Allen. Allen, the first female President of the United States in the fictional series, is portrayed by Geena Davis. Bergen's first appearance, according to the New York daily, will be Nov. 29 during a Thanksgiving-themed show.

Coincidentally, Bergen played the first female president in the film "Kisses for My President." The 1964 movie cast Fred MacMurray as her husband. In the film Bergen leaves the presidency when she discovers she is pregnant.

Discovered as a teenager by film producer Hal Wallis, Polly Bergen has accumulated over 300 film and TV credits. She won an Emmy Award for her acclaimed portrayal of Helen Morgan in TV's "The Helen Morgan Story" and received Emmy nominations for her work in two miniseries, "Winds of War" and "War and Remembrance." Bergen hosted her own variety show, "The Polly Bergen Show," and her signature sign-off tune, "The Party's Over" made the Jule Styne song a classic. Some of the actress' many film credits include Cape Fear, Move Over Darling, Kisses for My President, Making Mr. Right, Cry Baby and A Guide for the Married Man.. On Broadway, Bergen has been seen in Six Dance Lessons in Six Weeks, Follies, Cabaret, Love Letters, First Impressions, Champagne Complex and John Murray Anderson's Almanac. Bergen, who is also a political activist and a humanitarian, is the author of three-best selling books.

"Commander in Chief" airs Tuesday evenings, 9-10 PM ET; check local listings. Visit http://abc.go.com for more information.
