Latinologues, a collection of monologues about the Latino experience in America that began performances Sept. 13, has extended its limited run until Dec. 31. It was to have concluded on Dec. 4.
The show officially opened at Broadway's Helen Hayes Theatre Oct. 13.
The production — created and written by Rick Najera — comes to Broadway after touring the country the past few years; it won the 2004 Imagen Award for Best Live Theatrical Production. "It's comedy with a universal appeal with a Latin flavor," says creator Najera.
The Broadway company comprises Najera, Eugenio Derbez, Rene Lavan and Shirley A. Rumierk. Cheech Marin directs.
Najera, a comedy writer for such shows as "MAD TV" and "In Living Color," created Latinologues as a showcase for Latino talent. Since its inception, the production has employed more than 70 different actors, including Erik Estrada, Geraldo Rivera, Maria Conchita Alonso, Mario Lopez and Cristian De La Fuente. The work has been seen at South Coast Repertory Theater in Costa Mesa and the Victory Gardens Theater in Chicago as well as in San Diego, Los Angeles, Houston, Las Vegas and Miami.
