Will a Spears-Starring Sweet Charity Move to Hilton Theatre?

By Robert Simonson
23 Nov 2005

If recent reports turn out to be true, the Broadway revival of Sweet Charity may soon have a new star and a new home.

As previously reported by Playbill.com, Britney Spears—the international pop star who became a mother this past summer, and was a recent Sweet Charity audience member—may be Broadway bound.

"The Insider" first reported that the 23-year-old performer is in talks to replace Christina Applegate in the revival of Sweet Charity at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre. The television gossip program also reported that Spears' husband, Kevin Federline, may join the revival of the Neil Simon-Cy Coleman-Dorothy Fields musical as well.

Spears and Federline, as well as Spears' mother, attended the Nov. 17 performance of Sweet Charity, Playbill.com has learned.

On Nov. 23, the New York Post said that, should the casting be achieved, the production would move to the Hilton Theatre, which has roughly 400 more seats than the Al Hirschfeld. The Post also reported that Spears would likely be offered $25,000 a week against 10 percent of the box-office gross.

Charity would mark the Broadway debuts of both Spears and Federline.

The producers of Charity have made no official annoucement regarding Spears.

Sweet Charity currently stars Christina Applegate in the title role with Denis O'Hare as Oscar, Mylinda Hull as Nickie, Kearran Giovanni as Helene, Ernie Sabella as Herman and Paul Schoeffler as Vittorio.

The creative team for Sweet Charity comprises Walter Bobbie (director), Wayne Cilento (choreographer), Scott Pask (set designer), William Ivey Long (costume design), Brian MacDevitt (lighting designer), Peter Hylenski (sound designer), Don York (music director) and Don Sebesky (orchestrator).

DRG Records preserved the score of Broadway's new Sweet Charity on a cast album May 9. The disc was released in stores June 24.

The Al Hirschfeld Theatre is located at 302 West 45th Street.
