Billy Crystal Shares 700 Sundays with San Francisco Nov. 29-Dec. 17

By Ernio Hernandez
29 Nov 2005

Billy Crystal's Tony Award-winning solo show 700 Sundays will begin its national tour stop at San Francisco's Golden Gate Theatre Nov. 29.

Tony Award winner Des McAnuff (Big River, The Who's Tommy, Jersey Boys) again directs the work performed and written by Crystal with additional content by Alan Zweibel. This California stop will play through Dec. 17.

700 Sundays is billed as two-act play that "deals with [Crystal's] youth, growing up in the jazz world of Manhattan, his teenage years, and finally adulthood." The title refers to the number of days Crystal got to spend with his busy-with-jobs father who died when young Billy was only 15.

The solo work began performances on Broadway Nov. 12, 2004 and opened Dec. 5 at the Broadhurst Theatre for a run originally slated through March 6. The show — which won the Tony Award for Special Theatrical Event — extended through June 12.

Crystal has already performed his 700 Sundays at Toronto's Canon Theatre, Boston's Opera House and Chicago's Cadillac Palace Theatre. The tour will next hit Los Angeles' Wilshire Theatre, Jan. 6-Feb. 18, 2006.

Broadway producers Janice Crystal (the star's wife) and Larry Magid are joined by Face Productions for the new run of the work which was developed at La Jolla Playhouse, where McAnuff is artistic director.

The design team for 700 Sundays features David F. Weiner (scenic), David Lee Cuthbert (lighting), Michael Clark (projection) and Steve Canyon Kennedy (sound).
