By Andrew Gans
19 Dec 2005

For the first time since its release, the film of Jonathan Larson's "Rent" failed to be part of the top ten highest-grossing films of the weekend.

For the Dec. 16-18 weekend, the Chris Columbus-directed film brought in only $700,000, earning the number 15 spot on the box-office list.

"Rent" hit movie theatres across the country Nov. 23, earning $5.3 million in its first day of release and $10.7 million during the Thanksgiving holiday weekend. It earned $4.6 million over the Dec. 2-4 weekend and $2 million over the Dec. 9-11 weekend. To date, the movie musical has grossed $28 million.

"The Producers" — the new movie musical based on the Tony-winning stage version — opened in limited release Dec. 16. The Susan Stroman-directed picture brought in a solid $156,000 over the weekend, playing on just six screens. The Brooksfilms production — released by Universal Pictures and Columbia Pictures and produced by Mel Brooks and Jonathan Sanger — will open on 1,200 screens on Dec. 25. The movie, which reunites original stage stars Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick, will expand further on Friday, Jan. 13, 2006.

"King Kong" earned the number one spot on the top-ten list, bringing in over $50 million during the Dec. 16-18 weekend. Other films on the list include "The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe," "The Family Stone," "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire," "Syriana," "Walk the Line," "Yours, Mine and Ours," "Brokeback Mountain," "Just Friends" and "Aeon Flux.
