Latinologues Closes on Broadway Dec. 31

By Andrew Gans
31 Dec 2005

Latinologues, the acclaimed collection of monologues about the Latino experience in America, plays its final performance at the Helen Hayes Theatre Dec. 31 at 6 PM.

Created and written by Rick Najera, the production began performances on Broadway Sept. 13 and officially opened Oct. 13. The show, performed in English, was originally scheduled to play a limited engagement through Dec. 4. Due to ticket demand, that date was extended to Dec. 31.

Latinologues arrived on Broadway after touring the country the past few years. It won the 2004 Imagen Award for Best Live Theatrical Production. "It's comedy with a universal appeal with a Latin flavor," creator Najera recently commented.

The Broadway company currently features Najera, Eugenio Derbez, Rene Lavan and Shirley A. Rumierk. Cheech Marin directs.

Latinologues is scheduled to play Miami's Byron Carlyle Theater (Jan. 19-21) after its New York run concludes. A complete touring schedule will be announced shortly.

Najera, a comedy writer for such shows as "MAD TV" and "In Living Color," created Latinologues as a showcase for Latino talent. Since its inception, the production has employed more than 70 different actors, including Erik Estrada, Geraldo Rivera, Maria Conchita Alonso, Mario Lopez and Cristian De La Fuente. The work has been seen at South Coast Repertory Theater in Costa Mesa and the Victory Gardens Theater in Chicago as well as in San Diego, Los Angeles, Houston, Las Vegas and Miami.

Tickets for Latinologues are available by calling (212) 239-6200. The Helen Hayes Theatre is located at 240 West 44th Street.
