Winant, Then Bokhour to Join Broadway's Chicago

By Andrew Gans
28 Dec 2005

The Broadway company of the Tony-winning revival of Chicago will welcome two Amos Harts in the New Year.

Bruce Winant, who is currently part of the cast of the Fiddler on the Roof revival, will join the Chicago company Jan. 16. Winant will play the cuckolded husband of Roxie Hart through Feb. 5. Raymond Bokhour will then succeed Winant, playing Amos through March 19.

When Winant joins the Chicago gang at the Ambassador Theatre, three other actors will also begin their Chicago runs that same evening: John O’Hurley, the former “Seinfeld” star who scored a summer success on ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars,” will become the latest Billy Flynn, actress and former model Robin Givens will become Broadway's newest Roxie Hart, and Amra-Faye Wright — who has starred in the South-African productions of Chicago, Grease and A Chorus Line — will be the latest actress to portray Velma Kelly.

Bruce Winant has been seen on Broadway in Fiddler on the Roof, Miss Saigon and My Favorite Year as well as in the tours of Chicago and Les Misérables. Off-Broadway he was part of the cast of Jolson & Co., and his screen credits include "Friends and Family," "Ice Age," "Mighty Aphrodite," "Law & Order," "The West Wing," "Carnivale" and "Crossing Jordan." Winant will also be seen in the upcoming New York City Opera production of The Most Happy Fella.

Ray Bokhour made his Broadway debut in Chicago, when he previously played Amos after appearing in the tour of the Kander and Ebb musical. His other theatrical credits include Rameau's Nephew, King Lear, Road to Nirvana, Moliere's Shorts, Two Gentlemen of Verona, Much Ado About Nothing and The Lesson. On screen Bokhour has been seen in "Man on the Moon," "Hitman's Journal," "Personals," "Ali," Changing Lanes," "I'm With Lucy," "Ed," "The Job," "Third Watch" and "The Indiana Jones Chronicles."

Chicago currently features Charlotte d'Amboise as Roxie Hart, Luba Mason as Velma Kelly, P.J. Benjamin as Amos Hart, Debra Monk as Matron "Mama" Morton, R. Lowe as Mary Sunshine and Huey Lewis as Billy Flynn.

Chicago won the Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical in 1997 as well as awards for actors Bebe Neuwirth and James Naughton, director Walter Bobbie, lighting designer Ken Billington and choreographer Ann Reinking. The original production was directed and choreographed by the late Bob Fosse.

Chicago plays the Ambassador Theatre, located at 215 West 49th Street.
