Artistic Director leaves Soho Theatre in London

By John Nathan
16 Jan 2006

Soho Theatre artistic director Abigail Morris has left the company after 13 years in the job.

Under Morris, the new writing company moved to its current location in London’s Soho from the less fashionable Cockpit Theatre in 2000, since when the venue, a converted synagogue, has staged 78 new plays.

But it was while at the Cockpit that Morris directed one of her most conspicuous successes, >Kindertransport by Diane Samuels which went on to transfer to the West End and New York’s Manhattan Theatre Club.

Morris’s other notable productions include Amanda Whittington’s Be My Baby (Soho Theatre and UK tour), Shan Khan’s Office (Edinburgh International Festival and Soho) and Laura Wade’s Colder Than Here.

In a statement, Chair of the Soho Board said, “We are enormously grateful to Abigail for her contribution to the Company over a long period of time and I would particularly like to pay tribute to her vision and tenacity at a crucial stage in the theatre’s development. We wish her all the very best for the future.”

The company, which has begun the process of recruitment, will be advertising for a new artistic director next month. In the meantime Jonathan Lloyd will take on the role.

The Soho Theatre, which under Morris’s regime has often looked to America for new writing, also hosts the Royal Shakespeare Company’s season of new writing in London.
