Dirty Rotten Scoundrels Will Soak Seattle in Tour Launch

By Kenneth Jones
18 Jan 2006

The national tour of the Broadway musical Dirty Rotten Scoundrels will launch Aug. 6 at Seattle's Paramount Theatre, the producers announced Jan. 18.

Performances there will play to Aug. 12 prior to bookings in many major markets. The complete schedule will be announced.

Not yet revealed is casting for the titular con men, or the company. The Broadway originators were John Lithgow as Lawrence (he was Tony Award nominated for it) and Norbert Leo Butz as Freddy (he won the Best Actor Tony for it).

As on Broadway, the production will be directed by two-time Tony Award winner Jack O'Brien and choreographed by Tony Award-winner Jerry Mitchell. The original design team of David Rockwell (sets), Gregg Barnes (costumes) and Kenneth Posner (lighting) will also be reunited for the tour.

Dirty Rotten Scoundrels opened on Broadway on March 3, 2005, at the Imperial Theatre. The show won the 2005 Drama League Award as Best Musical, and was nominated for 11 Tony Awards. The book is by Jeffrey Lane (inspired by the film of the same name) and music and lyrics are by David Yazbek (The Full Monty).

Jonathan Pryce now plays Lawrence on Broadway, with Butz, Sherie Rene Scott, Joanna Gleason, Gregory Jbara and Mylinda Hull.

Dirty Rotten Scoundrels is produced by Marty Bell, David Brown, Aldo Scrofani, Roy Furman, Dede Harris, Amanda Lipitz, Greg Smith, Ruth Hendel, Chase Mishkin, Barry Tatelman, Susan Tatelman, Debra Black, Sharon Karmazin, Joyce Schweickert, Bernie Abrams, Michael Speyer, Barbara Whitman, Weissberger Theater Group (Jay Harris, Producer), Cheryl Wiesenfeld, Jean Cheever, Clear Channel Entertainment and Harvey Weinstein; Produced in association with MGM On Stage.

The original, Grammy Award-nominated, cast recording is available on Ghostlight Records.
