Idina Menzel to Star in Disney Movie Musical "Enchanted" by Menken and Schwartz

By Ernio Hernandez
24 Jan 2006

Wicked Tony Award winner and recent "Rent" film star Idina Menzel will star in an upcoming Disney movie musical titled "Enchanted" featuring a score by Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz.

Kevin Lima ("Tarzan," "102 Dalmations") directs the live-action (with animation) feature which will also star Amy Adams, Susan Sarandon, James Marsden and possibly Patrick Dempsey. A release date is scheduled for July 2007.

In "Enchanted," a princess (Adams) is banished by an evil queen (Sarandon) from the animated home of Andalasia to the live-action, present-day New York City.

Menzel earned a Tony for her turn as Elphaba in Stephen Schwartz's Wicked. The actress who appeared in the original cast of Rent reprised her role for the recent movie version. Other credits include Aida, See What I Wanna See, The Wild Party, The Vagina Monologues and turns in the films "Kissing Jessica Stein," "Just A Kiss," " The Tollbooth" and the upcoming "Ask the Dust."

Menken and Schwartz previously collaborated on the animated films "Pocahantas" and "The Hunchback of Notre Dame."

The composer Menken — known for his work on Little Shop of Horrors, Beauty and the Beast — has previously teamed with Disney on "Home on the Range," "The Little Mermaid," "Aladdin," "Beauty and the Beast" and "Hercules." His musical version of Sister Act (with lyricist Glenn Slater) makes its world premiere Oct. 24-Nov. 26 at California's Pasadena Playhouse. The duo are also developing a musical version of "Leap of Faith."

Schwartz has also penned music for the animated "The Prince of Egypt" and the television movie "Geppetto." He is known for his stage scores including Wicked, Godspell, Pippin, The Magic Show, Rags, The Baker's Wife and Children of Eden.
