Maxwell Caulfield Will Woo Women in Off-Broadway's Tryst, Starting March 21

By Kenneth Jones
02 Feb 2006

Maxwell Caulfield and Amelia Campbell.

Tryst, a new play billed as "a tantalizing glimpse behind the closed doors and unspoken secrets of Edwardian England," will be the next tenant at Off-Broadway's Promenade Theatre.

The sexy Edwardians of the play by Karoline Leach will be Maxwell Caulfield and Tony Award nominee Amelia Campbell. Opening is April 6 following previews from March 21.

Produced by Morton Wolkowitz and Barbara Freitag, Tryst — Part romance, part psychological thriller — will be directed by Joe Brancato.

"Tryst tells the story of how George Love, a handsome conman who woos loved-starved women, meets Adelaide Pinchon, a desperate woman, who dreams beyond her mundane world at the local millinery store," the producers announced. "Mr. Love has a history of illicit affairs, but after meeting the fantasizing shop-girl, there is a twist of fate."

The play contains nudity and adult themes and is not recommended for children.

Maxwell Caulfield starred in the Broadway production of An Inspector Calls and Off-Broadway productions of Entertaining Mr. Sloane, My Night with Reg and Salonica as well as touring productions of The Elephant Man and Sleuth. His film credits include "Grease 2," "The Boys Next Door" and "The Real Blonde." He gained wide fame on TV's "Dynasty" and "The Colbys."

Amelia Campbell appeared in Broadway's The Herbal Bed, Translations and A Small Family Business. She was Tony Award nominated for playing Meg in Our Country's Good.

Director Joe Brancato recently staged the Off-Broadway productions of Lee Blessing's Cobb produced by Kevin Spacey and From Door to Door by James Sherman.

He is founder and artistic director of the Penguin Rep Theatre.

Playwright Karoline Leach has worked in the theatre as actress, director and writer. An earlier version of Tryst, entitled The Mysterious Mr. Love, was produced on the London stage in 1997. She has written extensively about Lewis Carroll.

The creative team includes scenic designer David Korins (Bridge & Tunnel, Paper Mill's The Diary of Anne Frank), lighting designer by Jeff Nellis, costume designer Alejo Vietti and a sound designer Johnna Doty.

Wolkowitz's producing credits include Stomp, Unexpected Man, One Shot One Kill and Door to Door.

The Promenade Theatre is at Broadway at 76th Street.

The production will play Tuesdays at 7 PM and Wednesday through Saturday evenings at 8 PM with matinees on Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday at 3 PM.

Tickets are $45-$65.
