"Proof" - with Paltrow, Hopkins and Gyllenhaal - Arrives on DVD Feb. 14

By Andrew Gans
13 Feb 2006

"Proof," the Miramax film based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning play of the same name, arrives on DVD Feb. 14.

The motion picture - which stars Academy Award winners Gwyneth Paltrow and Anthony Hopkins along with "Brokeback Mountain" Oscar nominee Jake Gyllenhaal and stage and screen star Hope Davis - is based on David Auburn's Tony-winning play and features a screenplay by Auburn and Rebecca Miller.

Oscar winner Paltrow heads the cast as Catherine, a woman who may or may not be as mathematically gifted as her troubled genius of a father. John Madden directed the film; Madden also directed Paltrow in the London engagement of the play at the Donmar Warehouse.

Bonus DVD features include deleted scenes from the film, a featurette entitled "From Stage to Screen: The Making of 'Proof'" and commentary from director Madden. The DVD boasts Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound and is available in widescreen version. A French language track and Spanish subtitles are also available on the disc.

"Proof," according to Miramax production notes, "is the compelling story of an enigmatic young woman haunted by her father's past and the shadow of her own future, exploring the links between genius and madness, the tender relationships between fathers and daughters and the nature of truth and family. On the eve of her twenty-seventh birthday, Catherine (Paltrow), a young woman who has spent years caring for her brilliant but unstable father, a mathematical genius named Robert (Hopkins), must deal not only with the arrival of her estranged sister, Claire (Davis), but also with the attentions of Hal (Gyllenhaal), a former student of her father's who hopes to find valuable work in the 103 notebooks of Robert's."

The "Proof" film also features Gary Houston, Anne Wittman, Leland Burnett, Daniel Hatkoff, John Keefe, Haroula Spyropoulos, Colin Stinton and Leigh Zimmerman.

Proof opened at Broadway's Walter Kerr Theatre on Oct. 24, 2000, playing 916 performances before closing Jan. 5, 2003. The original cast included Mary-Louise Parker, who won a Tony Award for her performance; Larry Bryggman; Johanna Day; and Ben Shenkman. Under the direction of Daniel Sullivan, the production also won the 2001 Tony Award for Best Play as well as the Pulitzer Prize in Drama.
