Baltimore Dates Announced for National Tour of Doubt in 2007

By Kenneth Jones
21 Feb 2006

One of the first signs of Doubt on the road has been made public: The national tour of the Pulitzer Prize-winning, Tony Award-honored drama by John Patrick Shanley will play Baltimore in 2007.

The France-Merrick Performing Arts Center announced that the Doug Hughes-directed tour of the hit Broadway play will stop into the Hippodrome Theatre in the PAC May 1-13, 2007.

A launch date and casting for the tour have not been announced. Other regional presenters are expected to announce 2007 bookings of Doubt in the coming months.

The producers of the hit Broadway production (still playing at the Walter Kerr Theatre in New York City) announced in May 2005 (prior to the Best Play Tony win) that the production would tour in 2006-07.

The creative team, including director Doug Hughes, will reunite for the tour.

With Doubt, playwright John Patrick Shanley makes his Broadway debut after a long regional and Off-Broadway career (Danny and the Deep Blue Sea, Italian American Reconciliation, Four Dogs and a Bone). Shanley, Hughes and the entire four-actor company were nominated for 2005 Tony Awards for their work. The play won the 2005 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the 2005 Drama Critics Circle Award for Best Play. Cherry Jones won the Best Actress Tony for playing steely Sr. Aloysius.

"Set against the backdrop of a Bronx Catholic school in 1964, Doubt is the story of a strong-minded woman faced with a difficult decision," according to the producers. "Should she voice concerns about one of her male colleagues…even if she's not entirely certain of the truth?"

The conflict at hand involves the possible sexual abuse of a male student.

The current Broadway cast includes Eileen Atkins as Sister Aloysius, Ron Eldard as Father Flynn, Jena Malone as Sister James and Adriane Lenox (continuing in her 2005 Tony-winning turn) as Mrs. Muller. The play began at Off-Broadway's Manhattan Theatre Club in fall 2004 and moved to Broadway in 2005.

Doubt is produced by Carole Shorenstein Hays, MTC Productions Inc. (Lynne Meadow, artistic director; Barry Grove, executive producer), Roger Berlind and Scott Rudin.
