Come Fall, Tour of Doubt Will Star Cherry Jones

Cherry Jones will recreate her Tony Award-winning role in the national tour of John Patrick Shanley's Broadway hit, Doubt, being launched on a 24-city schedule starting in September 2006.

Jones won the 2005 Tony as Best Actress in a Play for her work as steely, certain — and somewhat scary — Sister Aloysius. She will play the first six months of the tour, following her work in Broadway's Faith Healer co-starring Ralph Fiennes.

Originated at Off-Broadway's Manhattan Theatre Club in 2004, Doubt moved to Broadway in 2005, when it won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the Tony Award for Best Play, among other awards.

The Doug Hughes-directed Broadway production continues at the Walter Kerr, where Eileen Atkins has assumed the role of the elder sister who suspects a priest (now played by Ron Eldard) of sexual misconduct with a student.

The producers commented, "We're delighted to bring Mr. Shanley’s thought-provoking and riveting play to the rest of the country, and we're thrilled that more audiences will get the chance to see Cherry Jones recreate her indelible performance as Sister Aloysius."

"Set against the backdrop of a Bronx Catholic school in 1964, Doubt is the story of a strong-minded woman faced with a difficult decision. Should she voice concerns about one of her male colleagues…even if she's not entirely certain of the truth?"

Set design is by John Lee Beatty, costume design is by Catherine Zuber, lighting design is by Pat Collins, original music and sound design is by David Van Tieghem.

Doubt is produced by Carole Shorenstein Hays, MTC Productions Inc. (Lynne Meadow, artistic director; Barry Grove, executive producer), Roger Berlind and Scott Rudin.

Additional casting for the tour will be announced shortly.

The tour is being booked by The Road Company. A booking at the Hippodrome Theatre in Baltimore in May 2007 has already been announced by the presenter there.

Jones will begin previews in Brian Friel's Faith Healer at Broadway's Booth Theatre April 18 this spring. Opening is May 4. Her work on Broadway includes The Lincoln Center Theater production of The Heiress, as well as Imaginary Friends, Major Barbara, A Moon for the Misbegotten, Our Country's Good and Angels in America.
