John Clancy's Fat Boy Opens at Off-Broadway's Soho Think Talk March 6

By Robert Simonson
06 Mar 2006

Fat Boy, a new play by former New York International Fringe Festival head John Clancy, will officially open at Soho's Ohio Theatre on March 6, after previews from March 4. The work, which has played the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, will run until March 25, and is co-produced by the Soho Think Tank in association with Clancy Productions.

Playwriting is a lesser-known talent of Clancy's. He made his name in New York theatre circles mainly as a producer, creating The Present Company and co-founding the Fringe, which will celebrate its tenth year in 2006. His past plays include The Paper Man and Notice of Default & Opportunity to Cure. Since exiting as director of the Fringe, he has formed Clancy Productions and toured the world with a variety of shows.

Fat Boy takes as its inspiration Alfred Jarry's anarchic Ubu Roi.  It is described as a "satire on modern America's insatiable appetites, from gobbling up 72 oz. steaks to small nations," and is presented as a "live-action Punch and Judy show." Its subtitle is "a grotesque in 3 acts."

The cast includes Del Pentecost, who was featured Off-Broadway in Debbie Does Dallas, the movie "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" and recently starred with Laura Benanti in the short-lived sitcom "Starved." Also in the cast are Nancy Walsh (Clancy's wife, who starred in the Off-Broadway show Cincinnati in 2003), David Calvitto, Jody Lambert and Matt Oberg. Clancy also directs.

Clancy is enjoying a busy season in New York. His production of Brian Parks' Goner recently played Off-Broadway. Later this year, he will present Parks' Americana Absurdum at P.S. 122, and screwmachine/eyecandy: Or How I learned to Stop Worrying and Love Big Bob at 59E59.

Tickets are $15 and can be purchased by calling (212) 868-4444 or by going to www.smarttix.com.
