Kristina, New Musical by ABBA Team, Has New York Workshop

By Robert Simonson
20 Mar 2006

Kristina, a new musical by ABBA songwriters Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus, the team behind Mamma Mia!, had a Manhattan workshop presentation March 10, the New York Post reported.

The show, which has already run in Sweden, is based on Wilhelm Moberg's novel "The Emigrents." It has been adapted into English, the Post said, by Herbert Kretzmer and John Weidman.

The musical has been on the Broadway radar for some time. In 1994, the songwriting duo told Newsday that they hoped to bring the musical to the United States soon. "I would love to see it in this country," Ulvaeus said, "because it's about America, about these people from Sweden going to Minnesota in the 1850s. It's an epic."

The Post article mentioned the possibility of a pre-Broadway tryout in Minneapolis and a Broadway run in spring 2007. Kretzmer told the daily, "We know what needs to be done [with the show], and we shall proceed on the knowledge we've gained."

Andersson and Ulvaeus' other theatre scores include Chess, which has often been mentioned for a return Broadway engagement.

Mamma Mia! continues to pack the Winter Garden Theatre, where it opened in October 2001.
