Whistle Down the Wind Opens in London March 27

By John Nathan
27 Mar 2006

Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Whistle Down the Wind opens at London’s Palace Theatre March 27.

The production, which is booking until June 3, is directed by one of the West End’s best-known producing names, Bill Kenwright. Previews began March 15.

The show will help fill the gap between the closing of Lloyd Webber's Woman in White on Feb. 25 and the opening of Spamalot on Oct. 2.

Kenrwight’s production of Whistle Down the Wind draws on the same creative team used in the touring version of the musical, with choreography by Henry Metcalfe and design by David Steadman.

Tim Rogers and Claire Marlowe will be making their West End debuts as The Man and Swallow, respectively.

The Jim Steinman (lyrics)/Lloyd Webber musical received its London premiere in 1998 at the Aldwych Theatre, where it ran for two-and-a-half years. The show was first seen in the U.S.A. at Washington, D.C.’s National Theatre.

Based on Mary Hayley Bell’s novel and Bryan Forbes’ 1962 film, the musical's book, written by Patricia Knop, Gale Edwards and Lloyd Webber, relocates the story from rural England to America’s Deep South and follows the fortunes of a group of children who believe that a man hiding in a town's barn is Jesus.
