Bonus Track Expected for London Cast Album of Sunday in the Park

By Kenneth Jones
03 Apr 2006

PS Classics' new London cast recording of Sunday in the Park With George, due for U.S. release May 30, will include a bonus track of an extended song.

Fans will hear Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine's original, full version of "The One on the Left," of which only a portion survives in the final show, according to PS Classics co-founder Tommy Krasker. The song will be performed by members of the London cast (though the full version is not in the London production).

The song involves an encounter between a pair of soldiers and two Parisian girls who are suspended in a Georges Seurat painting.

The disc will be released in the U.K. in May 23 to coincide with the show's West End opening.

Krasker told Playbill.com, "We toyed with the idea of including a rehearsal tape of Steve [Sondheim] performing the number, but the sound was problematic. So I proposed to Steve that we ask the 'Soldier' and 'Celestes' from the London cast — Christopher Colley, Sarah French-Ellis and Kaisa Hammarlund — to learn the song and do it live in the studio with the music director, Caroline Humphris. They learned it the week after the show closed at the Menier Chocolate Factory, and went back into the same studio where we'd recorded the cast album two weeks earlier. I think it's great to have record of a wonderful song that hasn't been heard in its entirety since, maybe, the original Playwrights Horizons performances. And it was especially fun to do it with these three performers who had been doing the show together for four months, because they had this really wonderful, nutty spirit."

Krasker said that although the track listing is still being finalized, the label is expecting 22 or 23 tracks, spread across two CDs.
