Virgin Territory: Dora-Nominated Trout Stanley Gets U.S. Premiere May 19 in NYC

By Kenneth Jones
11 Apr 2006

Trout Stanley, the lauded, lyrical Canadian play by Claudia Dey, will make its American premiere May 19 at The Culture Project@45 Bleecker in Manhattan.

The play first opened at the Ship's Company Theatre in Nova Scotia, and then moved to Toronto's Factory Theatre. In Toronto, it was nominated for a Dora Award (Toronto's highest theatre honor) in the category of Best Play.

The international theatre and film company, Renaissant Arts, presents the poetic comedy about the never-married virgin twins Grace and Sugar Ducharme, and what happened to them on their thirtieth birthday — which is also the 10th anniversary of their parents' untimely double-deaths.

Produced by Sarah Bagley, directed by Jen Wineman and featuring Kelly McAndrew, Erika Rolfsrud and Warren Sulatycky, Trout Stanley will have lighting design by Tse Wei Lim, set design by Tim Mackabee and costumes by Caitlin O'Connor. The sound has been designed by Elizabeth Coleman. The show's original score has been composed by Andrew Shapiro and will also feature the music of Heart.

The Culture Project@45 Bleecker is at 45 Bleecker Street at the corner of Lafayette Street. Opening is May 22. Performances will continue to June 11.

"Drawn from her experiences tree-planting in Northern Canada," according to production notes, Dey's play "resonates with the almost mythological characters and circumstances found in communities just on the edge of nowhere."

Dey's plays include Beaver (Factory Theatre, Horse Trade Theatre Group, New York, Theatre La Licorne, Montreal, Presentation House Theatre, Vancouver, published by Playwrights Canada Press), The Gwendolyn Poems (Factory Theatre, published by Playwrights Canada Press, Governor General's Award Nominee, Trillium Award Finalist), Trout Stanley (Ship's Company Theatre, Factory Theatre, The Guild Society/Sour Brides Theatre Society, Whitehorse, published by Coach House Books, Dora Award Nominee). Dey is a graduate of McGill University and the National Theatre School where she now works as a guest artist. She is currently writing a novel.

Director Jen Wineman's directing credits in New York City include Joshua Feldman’s Sleep Cycle (workshop at Playwrights Horizons), Ben Rosenthal's Welcome Back, Buddy Combs (Atlantic Theater Company Acting School), Christine Flanagan's Unfurnished (Baruch College), Clay McLeod Chapman's Jewish Mothers (Culture Project), Bradford Louryk's Klytaemnestra's Unmentionables (HERE), as well as two of her original pieces, Atelier (University Settlement) and 15 Seconds of Silence (American Place Theatre). At the Williamstown Theatre Festival, she has directed productions of Caryl Churchill's This is a Chair and Joshua Feldman's HeartBreakWordMusic and assisted director Maria Mileaf on Lucy Prebble's The Sugar Syndrome starring Gaby Hoffman.

Trout Stanley's schedule May 19-22 is Friday-Monday at 8 PM; and May 25-June 11 is Thursday-Sunday at 8 PM. It will play the downstairs space at 45 Bleecker.

Tickets are $18. For information, call Smarttix at (212) 868-4444, www.smarttix.com.
