Works by Schwartz, Lippa, Flaherty, Brohn, Marx and More Get Cello-Mated in NYC Concert April 24

By Kenneth Jones
23 Apr 2006

The New Voices Collective presents The Cello Project II, a cycle of 11 world-premiere chamber pieces by Broadway and theatre composers, featuring cellist Peter Sachon, April 24 at Peter Norton Symphony Space.

The 7 PM concert is a sequel to last year's sold-out inaugural Cello Project and is presented as part of NVC's Rush Hour Chamber Music series.

The composers whose works will be premiered on the program include William Brohn, Sam Davis, David Evans, Stephen Flaherty, Ricky Ian Gordon, Sean Gough, Andrew Lippa, Jeff Marx, Steve Marzullo, Stephen Schwartz and Ted Sperling.

The 11 pieces "explore the cello's almost limitless possibilities as both a solo instrument and chamber-music partner, and one piece will feature a performance on the electric cello," according to NVC. "Written across a wide-range of styles and for various instrumental combinations," the pieces will also showcase the talents of Adam Ben-David (piano); Victoria Drake (harp); Christian Hebel (violin); Ed Matthew (clarinet); Eddy Malave (viola); Victoria Paterson (violin); and William Shimmel (accordion).

NVC's Rush Hour Chamber Music Series "is designed to accommodate the busy New Yorker, who can stop by for a concert after work, at a reasonable price, and still be home in time for dinner."  The concerts last approximately one hour and feature "New York's finest chamber ensembles, presenting a diverse selection of repertoire, both classical and modern."

Tickets, priced at $21 ($18 for Symphony Space members; $15 for students/seniors/children), are available by phone: (212) 864-5400; online at www.symphonyspace.org; or at the box office.

Symphony Space is located at 2537 Broadway at 95th Street.

Since its inception in January 2003, the New Voices Collective (founded by Joel Fram, Doug Okerson, and Jen Bender) has been "dedicated to nurturing young composers in the creation of new works, as well as encouraging established composers to find their 'new voice' by experimenting with different musical genres."

The New Voices Collective (NVC) "provides both young and established composers the opportunity to hear their work performed by well-known classical and Broadway artists."

NVC announced that their concerts are made possible in part with public funds from the New York State Council on the Arts.
