A Meal to Remember: Festen Mezzanine Seats Are $25 for Weekday Perfs May 8-19

By Kenneth Jones

Festen, the juicy family soap opera that flirts with classism, racism, sexual abuse and suicide — with lots of red wine to wash it down — is luring audiences into its world of secrets with a $25 offer for all mezzanine seats.

Embraced by critics for its masterstroke directorial vision, Festen will be available for $25 for Monday-Friday performances May 8-19 — for those care to view it from the mezzanine of the Music Box Theatre.

The producers are calling the offer "Student Pricing for All!" The tickets must be purchased by Sunday May 14.

"I am extremely proud of the New York production of Festen, and have been struck by the impact it seems to have on audiences, especially the young at heart," said producer Bill Kenwright in a statement. "I'd like the broadest possible audience to see the show and opening up student pricing to everyone for the next two weeks will hopefully make that possible."

Directed by Rufus Norris, in a dramatization by David Eldridge from the Danish 1998 film of the same name, Festen hosts a cast of 14, including Larry Bryggman (Broadway's Proof, Twelve Angry Men), Michael Hayden (Hal in Lincoln Center's Tony winning Henry IV), Ali MacGraw ("Goodbye, Columbus," "The Getaway," and an Oscar nominee for "Love Story:), Julianna Margulies ("ER" and "The Sopranos") and Jeremy Sisto ("Six Feet Under").

In Festen (its English translation is "Celebration"), "a beloved patriarch (Larry Bryggman), surrounded by his wife (Ali MacGraw), his daughter (Julianna Margulies), his two sons (Michael Hayden as Christian; Jeremy Sisto as Michael) and a host of family and friends, is celebrating his 60th birthday at his country home. This promises to be a very special occasion, but as the evening progresses, the man's eldest son, Christian, feels compelled to break the silence surrounding a family secret. Standing to propose a toast, he offers his father — much to the delight of the guests — an amusing yet simple choice. And so the games begin. Revelations and accusations tumble across the dinner table, paving the way for a celebration that no one will ever forget."

The cast also includes John Carter, Diane Davis, Keith Davis, David Patrick Kelly, Stephen Kunken, Carrie Preston, Christopher Evan Welch and C.J. Wilson.

Thomas Vinterberg's "Festen" (or "The Celebration," as it was called when released in the U.S.) is the modern movie classic that put the Danish film movement Dogme 95 on the cultural map.

Festen plays Mondays at 8 PM, Tuesdays at 7 PM, Wednesdays through Saturdays at 8 PM, with matinees on Wednesdays & Saturdays at 2 PM at the Music Box Theatre, 239 West 45th Street.

All mezzanine seats for Monday through Friday performances May 8-19 will be $25 and can be purchased at the box office, through Telecharge at (212) 239-6200 or at www.broadwayoffers.com.
