Movin’ Out, the award-winning Broadway musical, is to make its final bow at London’s Apollo Victoria on May 22, nearly two months earlier than expected. Movin’ Out opened April 10; previews began March 28.

The Billy Joel and Twyla Tharp show was originally booking until July 17. The intended European tour, however, will still go ahead.

In a statement the show’s spokesperson said, “Despite enthusiastic audiences and standing ovations most nights together with some great reviews, the producers have made the difficult decision to close the show early. Movin' Out has not attracted the level of audiences needed to sustain the production which requires two troupes of dancers."

The show differs from other back-catalogue adaptations as Queen’s We Will Rock You and ABBA’s Mamma Mia!, in that the narrative is driven not by dialogue, but dance, with choreography by the Tony Award-winning Twyla Tharp.

Movin’ Out grossed over $100 million on Broadway during its three-year run at the Richard Rodgers Theatre where the show ran for over 1,300 performances until December 2005.
