Well May Tour U.S. With Tony-nominated Kron and Houdyshell

By Robert Simonson
17 May 2006

Well, the Tony-nominated Broadway play that closed on May 14, may tour the U.S. with its original stars, Lisa Kron and Jayne Houdyshell.

"It looks like a tour is potentially shaping up. We're just talking about it now," Kron told Playbill.com. "There are regional [theatres] that are interested in us."

Kron said that she and Houdyshell would star in the tour, should it happen. Both actresses were nominated for 2006 Tony Awards.

The praised Broadway play by Kron ended its run just two days shy of the May 16 announcement of the Tony Awards nominations. Well played 23 previews and 53 performances at the Longacre Theatre.

Although it opened to some of the best reviews for any play this season, Well—bereft of a name actor, star playwright or Pulitzer Prize (such as the hit play Doubt has)—struggled to find an audience. Audiences in recent weeks hovered around one third capacity.

The Broadway cast also included Daniel Breaker, Saidah Arrika Ekulona, John Hoffman and Christina Kirk.

Previews began at the Longacre Theatre March 10. Leigh Silverman (Off-Broadway's Danny and the Deep Blue Sea, Jump/Cut, Oedipus at Palm Springs) directed Well, as she had previous engagements of the presentational, highly theatrical work — a seriocomic investigation about wellness and the mystery of parent/adult child relationships.

Obie Award winners Lisa Kron and Jayne Houdyshell reprised the roles they created when Well had its premiere at The Public Theater in 2004. They played a subsequent 2005 run at American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco.
