Bloody Good Cause: Inishmore Hosts Blood Drive May 23, With Free Tix to First 50 Donors

By Kenneth Jones
22 May 2006

There's blood on the stage at the Lyceum Theatre, and on May 23 there will be blood on the street: Broadway's The Lieutenant of Inishmore will host a blood drive for the New York Blood Center.

The first 50 donors starting at 10 AM will get a free $25 ticket to the lauded satire by Martin McDonagh at the Lyceum, 149 West 45th Street. The blood drive will last to 3:30 PM. The dark comedy is an Irish-set blood-drenched look at terrorism and its stupid, amoral participants.

The New York Blood Center is one of the nation's largest, community-based blood collection and distribution organizations. Their mission is to collect 2,000 volunteer blood donations each day to support life-saving patient transfusion needs in close to 200 New York and New Jersey hospitals. The collection vehicle in this drive "is a state-of-the-art busmobile outfitted with five donor beds on board as well as room for private donor history interviews, free mini medical exams and free canteen refreshments."

The minimum age to donate blood is 17 (or 16 in New York City with parents' signed permission slip), minimum weight is 110 pounds, and donors must be in generally good health and not have donated in prior 56 days. Donors must also meet all Food & Drug Administration (FDA) and state department of health donor eligibility criteria.

To schedule an appointment to donate, call (646) 812-9035.

"We are very grateful to the producers of the Lieutenant of Inishmore for hosting this special blood drive," stated Linda Levi, New York Blood Center's Director of Communications. "Our community often faces blood shortages as we approach the summer. And with a long three-day holiday weekend approaching, this drive will help ensure our community has an adequate blood supply for all in need."

The Lieutenant of Inishmore has received five Tony Award nominations: Best Play, Best Direction of a Play (Wilson Milam), Best Actor in a Play (David Wilmot), Best Featured Actor in a Play (Domhnall Gleeson), Best Featured Actress in a Play (Alison Pill). Playwright Martin McDonagh won a 2006 Village Voice Obie Award.

Wilmot, Gleeson and Pill are all making their Broadway debuts.

The cast features Jeff Binder as James, Andrew Connolly as Christy, Dashiell Eaves as Joey, Peter Gerety as Donny, Domhnall Gleeson as Davey, Brian d'Arcy James as Brendan, Alison Pill as Mairead and David Wilmot as Padraic.
