Tony Awards June 10 Event Switches Focus From Prince to Nominees

By Robert Simonson
25 May 2006

Earlier this season, the Tony Awards announced that the 2006 Tony for Lifetime Achievement would be presented to Harold Prince at a private reception at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel June 10, one day prior to the 60th Annual Tony Awards.

But what to do when the recipient can't fit the date into his schedule? Harold Prince recently announced that he would be unable to attend the event, being busy staging the Las Vegas version of The Phantom of the Opera.

In response, the Tony people have converted the June 10 gathering into "a reception with nominees, past winners and presenters celebrating the 60th anniversary of the Tonys," according to the New York Times. When and where Prince—famously the top Tony-winner of all time—will collect his award remains to be seen.

The 2006 Tony Awards will be broadcast live from Radio City Music Hall on CBS-TV on June 11, from 8-11 PM ET.
