Broadway Stars Align for Dream True Recording, in Stores May 31

By Kenneth Jones
31 May 2006

The world premiere recording of the musical Dream True, with music by Ricky Ian Gordon, book and lyrics by Tina Landau, and additional lyrics by Gordon, will be in stores May 31 from PS Classics.

The recording was made possible by a grant from The Shen Family Foundation.

The recording cast includes Broadway's Brian d'Arcy James, Jason Danieley, Kelli O'Hara, Jessica Molaskey, Jeff McCarthy and Victoria Clark, plus Harrison Chad, William Ullrich, Michael McElroy, James Moye and Clarke Thorell.

The orchestra is conducted by Ted Sperling; the orchestrations are by Jonathan Tunick.

Dream True was winner of the Richard Rodgers Production Award given by The American Academy of Arts and Letters in 1999. It's inspired by the novel "Peter Ibbetson" by George du Maurier, and was originally produced by the Vineyard Theatre in June 1998, then in an extended Off-Broadway run in spring 1999.

A subsequent concert played on March 8, 2004, at CooperArts, a contemporary music series produced by Howard Stokar; this new CD, recorded at Avatar Studios in April 2004, is drawn from the concert performance.

According to PS Classics, Inc., "Certain songs will be familiar to music theatre aficionados: since the show's initial run, several of its songs have been performed frequently on recordings and in concert," including "Finding Home" and "We Will Always Walk Together."

Ricky Ian Gordon's credits include My Life With Albertine, with Richard Nelson at Playwrights Horizons; Only Heaven, his setting of Langston Hughes poetry premiered by Encompass Opera; and The Tibetan Book of the Dead, with Jean Claude Van Itallie at Houston Grand Opera. Gordon's songs have been performed and recorded by Renee Fleming, Dawn Upshaw, Audra McDonald, Kristin Chenoweth, Lorraine Hunt Lieberson, Harolyn Blackwell, and Betty Buckley.

PS Classics and its not-for-profit sister, PS Classics, Inc., "are devoted to celebrating a century of the Great American Songbook, that tradition of Broadway and American popular song that begins in Tin Pan Alley and stretches all the way to today’s most fresh and distinctive composer-lyricists."

The nonprofit division has released a restoration of a forgotten musical (Kay Swift's Fine and Dandy) and recordings drawn from rare sound archives, including "Sondheim Sings, Volumes I & II."

PS Classics is distributed by Image Entertainment.
