The renewal follows Emmy winner and Tony nominee Jeff Daniels ( God of Carnage, Redwood Curtain) September tweet, "It's official. #Newsroom coming back for a Season 3." HBO then established that an official order for season three had not yet been made.

Aaron Sorkin's TV drama, which takes place behind the scenes of a cable news show, also stars Emily Mortimer, Tony winner John Gallagher Jr. ( Spring Awakening, Rabbit Hole), Tony nominee Alison Pill ( The Lieutenant of Inishmore, The Miracle Worker), Tony nominee Thomas Sadoski ( Other Desert Cities, Reasons to Be Pretty), Dev Patel, Olivia Munn, Tony nominee Sam Waterston ( Abe Lincoln in Illinois, Hamlet) and Grace Gummer ( The Columnist, Arcadia).

Academy Award winner and Tony nominee Jane Fonda ( 33 Variations, There Was a Little Girl) played a recurring guest role, for which she received an Emmy nomination.

"I'm sure this farewell season will be one to remember," HBO's Michael Lombardo is quoted in Variety as saying.
