Ms. Wells, of Manhattan, was 79. The cause of death was an infection of the colon.
She performed in films in the 1940s ("Here Come the Waves") before moving to New York, where she found roles in shows during the golden age of television. She acted in plays including George Abbott's Three Men on a Horse, Any Wednesday with Sandy Dennis, and Edward Albee's Everything in the Garden.
Ms. Wells was Louise Capice on the now-defunct "Edge of Night." She became a staff writer on "All My Children," helping earn the writing staff Emmy Awards.
