"Hairspray" film director Adam Shankman is attached to direct and produce a new project for HBO Films based on the life of Rose Hovick — the unstoppable stage mother of Gypsy fame — to be titled "Madame Rose," according to Deadline.com.

Shankman will direct and executive produce the film that is written by Tristine Skyler. Jennifer Gibgot will join as co-executive producer.

"Madame Rose" will tell the true story of the woman whose life was depicted in the memoirs of her daughters, June Havoc and Gypsy Rose Lee, as well as the Tony Award-winning musical Gypsy.

The iconic musical role has drawn such names as Ethel Merman, Angela Lansbury, Rosalind Russell, Tyne Daly, Linda Lavin, Betty Buckley, Bette Midler, Bernadette Peters and Patti LuPone. In recent years Barbra Streisand has also been reported to be working on a film remake of Gypsy, with the intent to star as Rose.

Casting and a production timeline have not been announced.
