"Hairspray" film director Adam Shankman is attached to direct and produce a new project for HBO Films based on the life of Rose Hovick — the unstoppable stage mother of Gypsy fame — to be titled "Madame Rose," according to Deadline.com.
Shankman will direct and executive produce the film that is written by Tristine Skyler. Jennifer Gibgot will join as co-executive producer.
"Madame Rose" will tell the true story of the woman whose life was depicted in the memoirs of her daughters, June Havoc and Gypsy Rose Lee, as well as the Tony Award-winning musical Gypsy.
Holed up in a seedy motel on the edge of the Mojave Desert, two former lovers unpack the deep secrets and dark desires of their tangled relationship, passionately tearing each other apart. Led by director Daniel Aukin (Back Back Back at MTC, 4,000 Miles), Tony winner Nina Arianda (Venus in Fur at MTC, Born Yesterday) and Sam Rockwell (A Behanding in Spokane, The Way Way Back) bring an explosive intensity to Sam Shepard’s (Buried Child, True West) landmark myth of the new Wild West.
