All-Male Broadway Beauty Pageant to Be Held in March 2011 at Symphony Space
23 Sep 2010
The fifth annual Broadway Beauty Pageant, a benefit for The Ali Forney Center — New York City's primary emergency housing resource for homeless LGBT youth — will be held March 21, 2011, at the Peter Norton Symphony Space in Manhattan.
Conceived by Jeffery Self and directed by Ryan J. Davis, the 8 PM event will feature musical direction by Christopher Denny. The evening is produced by Wil Fisher, Ryan J. Davis, Jeffrey Self and Matthew Oberstein.
Previous winners of the all-male beauty contest include Charlie Williams (Mr. Memphis 2010), Anthony Hollock (Mr. Hair 2009), Marty Thomas (Mr. Xanadu 2008) and Frankie James Grande (Mr. Mamma Mia! 2007). Contestants, judges and the host will be announced at a later date.
Peter Norton Symphony Space is located at 2537 Broadway (at 95th Street).
The Ali Forney Center (AFC) was started in June 2002 in response to the lack of safe shelter for LGBT youth in New York City. They have grown quickly to become the nation's largest and most comprehensive organization dedicated to homeless LGBT youth. They are "committed to providing LGBT youth with safe, dignified, nurturing environments where their needs can be met and where they can begin to put their lives back together." Holed up in a seedy motel on the edge of the Mojave Desert, two former lovers unpack the deep secrets and dark desires of their tangled relationship, passionately tearing each other apart. Led by director Daniel Aukin (Back Back Back at MTC, 4,000 Miles), Tony winner Nina Arianda (Venus in Fur at MTC, Born Yesterday) and Sam Rockwell (A Behanding in Spokane, The Way Way Back) bring an explosive intensity to Sam Shepard’s (Buried Child, True West) landmark myth of the new Wild West.
