18 Sep 2012
Members of the entertainment industry, including Barbra Streisand and veteran cast members from A Chorus Line, gather Sept. 18 to pay tribute to late Academy and Tony Award-winning composer Marvin Hamlisch.
The invitation-only event at the Peter Sharp Theatre promises performances by Streisand, Aretha Franklin, Liza Minnelli, Itzhak Perlman, Lang Lang, Michael Feinstein, Chris Botti, Maria Friedman, Brian d'Arcy James, Carter Brey, Essential Voices USA, and cast members from A Chorus Line and Hamlisch's final musical, The Nutty Professor.
Hamlisch, whose numerous compositions included A Chorus Line, They're Playing Our Song, Sweet Smell of Success, "The Way We Were," and more, died Aug. 6 at the age of 68.
The Juilliard School, along with Hamlisch's family and friends, will celebrate his legacy and are expected to announce scholarships named in his honor during the evening.
Holed up in a seedy motel on the edge of the Mojave Desert, two former lovers unpack the deep secrets and dark desires of their tangled relationship, passionately tearing each other apart. Led by director Daniel Aukin (Back Back Back at MTC, 4,000 Miles), Tony winner Nina Arianda (Venus in Fur at MTC, Born Yesterday) and Sam Rockwell (A Behanding in Spokane, The Way Way Back) bring an explosive intensity to Sam Shepard’s (Buried Child, True West) landmark myth of the new Wild West.
