Tony Award winner Betty Buckley, who will be seen this summer in the Signature Theatre production of Horton Foote's The Old Friends, takes part in a private reading of the new musical The Thing About Time June 3 in Manhattan.
Featuring music, book and lyrics by David Buskin and Jake Holmes, the reading is directed by Jerry Dixon with musical direction by Irwin Fisch. Robert Witherow is the stage manager.
"A seminal event reunites five war-torn friends," according to press notes for The Thing About Time, which has "richly drawn characters, and a pop-folk-rock score. This new musical allows us to experience the healing force that only time allows."
About the goals of the reading, director Dixon recently told Playbill.com, "Besides presenting to the theatre industry, who are in the position to move the project forward, we also want to find out if the revisions — from the last time out — are clear, dynamic and sound."
Holed up in a seedy motel on the edge of the Mojave Desert, two former lovers unpack the deep secrets and dark desires of their tangled relationship, passionately tearing each other apart. Led by director Daniel Aukin (Back Back Back at MTC, 4,000 Miles), Tony winner Nina Arianda (Venus in Fur at MTC, Born Yesterday) and Sam Rockwell (A Behanding in Spokane, The Way Way Back) bring an explosive intensity to Sam Shepard’s (Buried Child, True West) landmark myth of the new Wild West.
