Tony Award nominee Billy Magnussen and Julia Stiles have joined the cast of "The Great Gilly Hopkins," the new film adaptation of the Katherine Paterson novel of the same name, according to Deadline.com.
Stiles (Oleanna) will play the mother to young protagonist Gilly, who will be portrayed by "The Book Thief" star Sophia Nelisse. Magnussen ("Into the Woods," Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike) will portray the young girl's social worker.
The film centers around the young girl's desire to be reunited with her mysterious and exotic mother, according to Deadline. It is currently filming in New York City. The book was adapted for screen by Paterson's son, David Paterson.
Holed up in a seedy motel on the edge of the Mojave Desert, two former lovers unpack the deep secrets and dark desires of their tangled relationship, passionately tearing each other apart. Led by director Daniel Aukin (Back Back Back at MTC, 4,000 Miles), Tony winner Nina Arianda (Venus in Fur at MTC, Born Yesterday) and Sam Rockwell (A Behanding in Spokane, The Way Way Back) bring an explosive intensity to Sam Shepard’s (Buried Child, True West) landmark myth of the new Wild West.
