Tony Award winner Brian Stokes Mitchell and Tony nominee Lainie Kazan will guest star on the hit ABC television series "Ugly Betty" this spring, according to Entertainment Weekly.
Mitchell, who won the 2000 Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical for Kiss Me, Kate, will portray Don, ex-flame of Wilhelmina Slater (played by Tony nominee Vanessa Williams). Mitchell’s appearance may lead to a recurring role.
Kazan, who was nominated for a Tony Award for My Favorite Year, will play Bobby’s (Adam Rodriguez) Italian mother, Dina, and potential mother-in-law to Hilda. She will appear on the season’s 15th episode alongside Nestor Serrano, who will play her husband.
Kazan also appeared on Broadway in Funny Girl, Bravo Giovanni and The Happiest Girl in the World. She has starred on screen in “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” and “Beaches” and on television in “The Nanny” and “Beverly Hills, 90210.”
Besides winning the Tony Award for Kiss Me, Kate, Mitchell also appeared on Broadway as Coalhouse Walker, Jr. in Ragtime, Valentin in Kiss of the Spider Woman, Jelly Roll Morton in Jelly’s Last Jam and as Don Quixote in Man of La Mancha. He starred as Emile de Becque in “South Pacific in Concert from Carnegie Hall” as part of the PBS Great Performances series, guest starred on “Frasier” and “The Fresh Prince of Bel Air,” and spent seven seasons as Dr. Jackpot Jackson on “Trapper John M.D.”
Holed up in a seedy motel on the edge of the Mojave Desert, two former lovers unpack the deep secrets and dark desires of their tangled relationship, passionately tearing each other apart. Led by director Daniel Aukin (Back Back Back at MTC, 4,000 Miles), Tony winner Nina Arianda (Venus in Fur at MTC, Born Yesterday) and Sam Rockwell (A Behanding in Spokane, The Way Way Back) bring an explosive intensity to Sam Shepard’s (Buried Child, True West) landmark myth of the new Wild West.
