Meanwhile, the board's newbie this week, David Leveaux's new staging of the Bard's Romeo and Juliet, did very well indeed for its first week out of the gate. The classical revival played to 91% capacity audiences, drawing 65% of its potential gross over its first two previews. Not bad for a hot week in August. Certainly, "Lord in the Rings" star Orlando Bloom, the play's Romeo, did nothing to dissuade certain ticketbuyers.
The Tony-winning revival of Pippin slipped out of the 100%-capacity club for the first time in many weeks, clocking in at just under 99%. Besting it in attendance were The Lion King, The Book of Mormon, Matilda The Musical and Kinky Boots.
The recent summer musical openers hung in there, but just barely. First Date took in 47% of its possible collection, to 72% capacity audiences, while Soul Doctor garnered a mere 26% of gross to audiences that reached the 84% mark. Let It Be, the faux Beatles concert, meanwhile, barely commanded an audience at all, filling house to the tune of only 43%.
Otherwise, nearly every show lost steam this week, as is usually the case in the dog days.
Overall, though Broadway collected a show, with attractions totaling 24, the numbers at the till fell. Composite collection was $20,604,711, down from last week's $21,839,380.
