Shonda Rhimes created the spinoff from her popular medical drama "Grey's Anatomy." The hour-long series debuts at 9 PM (ET) and will continue Wednesday nights in the same time slot.
Walsh reprises her character of Dr. Addison Forbes Montgomery from "Grey's Anatomy" for the new "Private Practice." "Having left behind Seattle Grace Hospital, a broken marriage with Derek 'McDreamy' Shepherd, and her torn relationship with Mark 'McSteamy' Sloan, Addison moves to Los Angeles for sunnier weather and happier possibilities," according to show notes.
The new series also features McDonald (110 in the Shade), Diggs (Rent) and Daly (The Caine Mutiny Court-Marshall) as well as Paul Adelstein ("Prison Break"), Amy Brenneman ("Judging Amy"), KaDee Strickland ("Wedding Bells") and Chris Lowell ("Veronica Mars").
McDonald recently was Tony Award-nominated for her turn in the revival of 110 in the Shade). The actress has earned four Tony wins for A Raisin in the Sun, Ragtime, Master Class and Carousel. Other Broadway credits include Henry IV, Marie Christine and The Secret Garden. She appeared on HBO in "Wit" and sang in the made-for-television Disney production of "Annie."
Walsh is also a veteran of the stage. The San Jose, CA, native became involved in regional theatre while attending University of Arizona. She then headed to Chicago and worked with the Piven Theatre Workshop and the Chicago Shakespeare Repertory, appearing in Born Guilty, Moon Under Miami and Troilus and Cressida. In New York City she performed onstage with the comedy troupe "Burn Manhattan" and in the Off-Broadway plays Flight Courier and The Four Twins.
Right after "Private Practice," ABC also premieres "Dirty Sexy Money," which finds Peter Krause (After the Fall) taking over the legal affairs of a wealthy New York family headed by Donald Sutherland (Ten Unknowns) and Jill Clayburgh (Barefoot in the Park). Glenn Fitzgerald (Lobby Hero) is also among the cast of the show penned by Craig Wright (Recent Tragic Events).
Wednesdays on ABC will become more of a must for theatre folk when the new series "Pushing Daisies" begins Oct. 3. Kristin Chenoweth (Wicked, "The West Wing"), Anna Friel (Closer), Lee Pace (Small Tragedy), Ellen Greene (Little Shop of Horrors) and Swoosie Kurtz (Frozen, "Sisters") star in the series which will play regularly at 8 PM. Jim Dale (The Threepenny Opera) provides narration for the series.
