Sister Act has a score by Tony and Academy Award winner Alan Menken (Newsies, Leap of Faith, Beauty and the Beast) and Glenn Slater (Leap of Faith, Love Never Dies). The musical premiered on Broadway March 24, 2011, at the Broadway Theatre after a 2009 London debut.
The Broadway production features an overhauled book by Tony Award nominee Douglas Carter Beane (The Little Dog Laughed, Lysistrata Jones). Emmy Award winners Cheri and Bill Steinkellner wrote the original London book and are co-authors of the new Broadway production.
The Broadway incarnation of Sister Act also brought on board Tony Award-winning director Jerry Zaks (Guys and Dolls, The Addams Family) to help shape the musical for New York audiences. It closes after 28 previews and 561 performances at the Broadway Theatre.
A national tour will launch this October at Toronto's Ed Mirvish Theatre.
Upcoming productions are also planned for Paris (September 2012); Stuttgart (December 2012); Scheveningen, Holland (March, 2013); as well as Moscow, Madrid, Prague, Sao Paolo, South Korea and Japan.
Sister Act received five 2011 Tony Award nominations including Best Musical, Best Original Score, Best Book of a Musical, Best Actress in a Musical (Patina Miller) and Best Featured Actress in a Musical (Victoria Clark).

The cast currently features Raven-Symoné as Deloris Van Cartier, Tony nominee Carolee Carmello as Mother Superior, Fred Applegate as Monsignor, Sarah Bolt as Sister Mary Patrick, John Treacy Egan as Joey, Demond Green as TJ, Chester Gregory as Eddie, Kingsley Leggs as Curtis, Marla Mindelle as Sister Mary Robert, Audrie Neenan as Sister Mary Lazarus and Caesar Samayoa as Pablo.
The Broadway production features the work of original London creative team members, including choreographer Anthony Van Laast, scenic designer Klara Zieglerova, costume designer Lez Brotherston and lighting designer Natasha Katz. John Shivers is the sound designer for the Broadway run.
Michael Kosarin serves as musical supervisor, with dance music arrangements by Mark Hummel, orchestrations by Doug Besterman and electronic music by Andy Barrett. Music director is Brent-Alan Huffman.
According to producers, "When disco diva Deloris Van Cartier witnesses a murder, she is put in protective custody in the one place cops are sure she won't be found — a convent! Disguised as a nun, she finds herself at odds with both the rigid lifestyle and an uptight Mother Superior. Using her unique disco moves and singing talent to inspire the choir, Deloris breathes new life into the church and community, but in doing so blows her cover. Soon the gang are giving chase, only to find themselves up against Deloris and the power of her new found Sister Hood."
The Broadway Theatre is located at 1681 Broadway. For tickets phone (212) 239-6200, or visit Telecharge.com.
