Tony Award-winning producers Scott and Brian Zeilinger announced Sept. 4 that Human, a new play by Academy Award nominee Chazz Palminteri (A Bronx Tale), will premiere on Broadway in the 2013-14 season.
Directed by Tony Award winner Jerry Zaks, a New York reading of Human will be presented Sept. 7 with a cast that features Palminteri, Evan Jonigkeit, Sophie Monk, Tony Award nominee Jeremy Shamos and Academy Award winner Mira Sorvino.
"A chance encounter on a Central Park bench thrusts two diametrically opposed men into the fight for their lives in Human, a darkly comic play that proves that crime, whether on Wall Street or the mean streets, ain’t no walk in the park," according to press notes.
Human will mark Palminteri’s return to Broadway as both playwright and actor. His acclaimed solo work, A Bronx Tale, also directed by Zaks, had a hit run at The Walter Kerr Theatre in 2007-08.
Holed up in a seedy motel on the edge of the Mojave Desert, two former lovers unpack the deep secrets and dark desires of their tangled relationship, passionately tearing each other apart. Led by director Daniel Aukin (Back Back Back at MTC, 4,000 Miles), Tony winner Nina Arianda (Venus in Fur at MTC, Born Yesterday) and Sam Rockwell (A Behanding in Spokane, The Way Way Back) bring an explosive intensity to Sam Shepard’s (Buried Child, True West) landmark myth of the new Wild West.
