Cult Hit The Vaudevillians, Starring Jinkx Monsoon, Will Return to NYC
13 May 2014
The Vaudevillians, the musical comedy featuring "RuPaul's Drag Race" winner Jinkx Monsoon that played an extended New York City run last year, will return for a limited engagement June 15-22 at The Laurie Beechman Theater.
Originally planned as a one-night engagement, critics warmed to the evening that co-starred composer and musician Richard Andriessen (Major Scales), prompting The Vaudevillians to extend six times during its initial run.
The return engagement will feature a revised version of the show, which has been pared down to 75 minutes and will include new material. The New York City return presentation of The Vaudevillians precedes a three-month summer run at The Art House Theater in Provincetown.
Here's how the show is billed: "Throughout the 1920's Kitty Witless and Dr. Dan Von Dandy toured the United States as The Vaudevillians, wowing audiences with their edgy, original music. One day, while touring through Antarctica, they were victims of a devastating avalanche and were buried under two tons of sleet and snow - instantly freezing them alive. But thanks to Global Warming, they recently thawed out only to discover that pop artists had stolen their music and passed it off as their own. Much to their chagrin, songs including "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" (which was originally about the Woman's Suffragette Movement), and "Drop it Like it's Hot" (which was originally about the invention of the electric iron) had become hits for lesser artists. Now, at long last, they are taking to the stage to reclaim their songs, performing their music as originally composed."
Monsoon is the alter ego of Jerick Hoffer, who appeared as the lead dancer in the world's largest drag queen chorus line, which made the Guinness Book of World Records. Hoffer's other credits include Balagan Theatre's Spring Awakening, The 5th Avenue Theatre's Rent and Hedwig and the Angry Inch, produced by Balagan Theatre and Seattle Theatre Group.
The Laurie Beechman Theater inside West Bank Café is located at 407 West 42nd Street. Tickets are $25 plus a $15 food-drink minimum. For tickets, call (212) 352-3101 or visit SpinCycleNYC.com.
