Dame Edna Everage, the comedy character created by Barry Humphries, makes her pantomime debut in Dick Whittington at London's New Wimbledon Theatre for this year's Christmas season, opening Dec. 15 (following previews that began Dec. 9), for a run through Jan. 15, 2012.

Dame Edna, who plays the Saviour of London, is part of a cast that also features Sam Attwater in the title role, Anna Williamson as Alice Fitzwarren and Eric Potts as the panto dame Sarah the Cook.

In a previous press statement, Dame Edna commented, "I am delighted to be making my pantomime debut and starring as the Saviour of London in Dick Whittington. Being a stranger to pantomime I am looking forward to all the fun and frolics and meeting all of you lovely little possums of London, but most of all, the thought of guiding Dick Whittington to become Lord Mayor of London thrills me. I did the exact same thing for Boris Johnson not long ago."

Dame Edna Everage has previously starred in several of her own theatre productions, including Housewife, Superstar, A Night with Dame Edna and several Royal Variety Performances as well as her Tony Award-winning production Dame Edna: The Royal Tour on Broadway. TV credits include "A Night on Mount Edna" and "The Dame Edna Experience" with notable guests including Cher, Robin Williams and Sean Connery, each interviewed in her own inimitable style.

New Wimbledon Theatre's pantomime is produced by First Family Entertainment, who have produced the theatre's pantomimes for the previous six years, and where previous headline stars have included David Hasselhoff and Louie Spence last year in Peter Pan; Pamela Anderson, Paul O’Grady, Ruby Wax, Anita Dobson and Brian Blessed in Aladdin in 2009; Gareth Gates and Joanna Page in Cinderella in 2008-09; and Henry Winkler in Peter Pan in 2006.
