David Morse (The Seafarer) will star in the title role of The Unavoidable Disappearance of Tom Durnin, a world-premiere play by Steven Levenson, which will begin performances May 31 at the Laura Pels Theatre in the Harold and Miriam Steinberg Center for Theatre, as part of Roundabout Theatre Company's New Play Initiative.
Five-time Tony nominee Scott Ellis (Curtains, Twelve Angry Men, 1776, Steel Pier, She Loves Me), who helmed the acclaimed Broadway revival of The Mystery of Edwin Drood, will direct the world-premiere staging, which will also star Christopher Denham (The Lieutenant of Inishmore, "Master Harold"…and the Boys) as James Durnin and Sarah Goldberg (Clybourne Park) as Katie Nicholson.
Additional casting will be announced at a later date. Opening night is set for June 27 for a run through Aug. 25.
Here's how Roundabout bills the new work: "From playwright Steven Levenson (Roundabout's acclaimed The Language of Trees) comes this funny, raw and moving world premiere about the price we pay for defaulting on those we love. Tom Durnin did the time for his white-collar crime. Now, he’s determined to win back the respect he believes he deserves—even if that means ripping apart the new life his family has so carefully put together in his absence. Tom’s son warily allows his father to camp out on his couch, hoping the man who let everyone down has finally turned a new page. After a lifetime of empty promises, can Tom find a place in a family that has worked so hard to move on without him?"
The design team includes Beowulf Boritt (sets), Jeff Mahshie (costumes), Donald Holder (lights) and Obadiah Eaves (original music and sound).
The Unavoidable Disappearance of Tom Durnin is part of Roundabout's New Play Initiative, a collection of programs designed to foster and produce new work by emerging and established artists. The Unavoidable Disappearance of Tom Durnin was commissioned by Roundabout Theatre Company following Levenson's New York debut with The Language of Trees in 2008 at Roundabout Underground.
This play is a recipient of an Edgerton Foundation New American Plays Award.
