According to an Equity casting notice, Tony nominee Paulus (Hair, Porgy and Bess) is seeking an actor or actress to portray the role of the Leading Player. Ben Vereen originated the role of the mysteriously seductive guide who takes audiences along Pippin's journey.
As previously reported, Paulus will collaborate with Gypsy Snider of the Montreal-based circus company Les 7 doigts de la main (7 Fingers). Snider is also the co-director/choreographer of the Off-Broadway cirque spectacle Traces.
Paulus and Snider, according to the casting notice, are seeking performers with strong physical strength, flexibility and dexterity; those with skills in acrobatics, aerial, gymnastics and tumbling are a plus. "We would want to integrate these creative and unique skills into the musical numbers. Skills with contortion, tissue, hand-balancing, hand to hand, pairs and duo-mixed would be of added value," the breakdown reads.
The team will first develop Pippin from July 30-Aug 19 at A.R.T. prior to a Dec. 1 start of previews in Cambridge, MA. The production is scheduled to open Dec. 19 for a run through Jan. 20, 2013.
Pippin has a score by Academy Award winner and Tony nominee Stephen Schwartz (Wicked, Godspell, "The Prince of Egypt") and a book by Tony nominee Roger O. Hirson.
Pippin features such songs as "Corner of the Sky," "Magic To Do," "With You," "Glory," "No Time at All," Morning Glow" and "Love Song."
Select single tickets for Pippin will go on sale May 1. Visit AmericanRepertoryTheater. A.R.T. is located at 64 Brattle Street in Cambridge, MA.
