The Hamburg production will be cast locally in Germany and will be performed in German.
“The tale of Aladdin, the Genie and those three famous wishes is beloved around the world and we are incredibly proud of Casey Nicholaw’s spectacular new production which brings the story to vivid theatrical life.” said Thomas Schumacher, president and producer Disney Theatrical Productions, in a statement. “Following in the footsteps of our record-breaking productions of The Lion King and Tarzan, we look forward to another partnership with Stage Entertainment and can’t wait to share the heart and wit of this timeless tale with German audiences.”
Uschi Neuss, managing director Stage Entertainment Germany, added, “We are delighted to bring the next smash-hit musical from Disney to Germany in addition to the enormously successful productions of The Lion King and Tarzan. Hamburg, with its reputation as Germany’s musical-capital, is the perfect city to host the European premiere. More than 14 million people have seen and enjoyed The Lion King and Tarzan to date in Germany, and there are many more to come. Aladdin will be a fantastic addition to our portfolio in Hamburg.”
The first Disney Theatrical Production in Germany, The Lion King, is now in its 13th year in Hamburg, and the second show, Tarzan, is currently playing in Stuttgart, following five years in Hamburg.
Produced on Broadway by Disney Theatrical Productions, Aladdin opened to critical acclaim March 20 at the New Amsterdam Theatre, where it continues. The show features music by Tony Award and eight-time Oscar winner Alan Menken, lyrics by two-time Oscar winner Howard Ashman, three-time Tony Award and three-time Oscar winner Tim Rice and two-time Tony Award nominee Chad Beguelin, with a book by Beguelin. The musical is directed and choreographed by Tony Award winner Casey Nicholaw.
